Criminal Law

The criminal legal system is typically recognised by the severity of the penalties that can be applied by a court - some of these include fines, probation, suspended sentences, and actual periods of imprisonment.

I accept instructions to act in criminal matters in the Magistrates Courts, including for:

  • Providing advice about the charge, range of penalties, and procedures of the court;
  • Conferencing with the Police;
  • Appearing at a hearing for contested charges including the briefing counsel (a specialised advocate);
  • Bail applications & negotiations;
  • Acting for you at a plea of guilty and sentencing.

The best result possible is having charges withdrawn - but - it might be necessary to prepare for the worst and a solicitor can reduce the risks to you and your future.

Even if a matter is finalised, there can be a stigma to being involved in criminal proceeds. It is important to have a solicitor that will treat your matter sensitively and fight for an outcome that is just in your circumstances.

A solicitor with experience in more than just criminal law will provide a complete service for you, and spot issues that might encroach on other aspects of your life - not uncommonly is the potential for civil claims, separation, and domestic violence.

Traffic Law

The road rules of Queensland  can be complex to navigate, especially when you are facing the stresses of risks of severe penalties such as a disqualification of your license or large fines.  Consequences might follow from:

  • Speeding
  • Drink Driving
  • Driving while under the influence of a drug
  • Driving with a suspended license
  • Dangerous operation of a vehicle
  • Not fitting your L or P plates securely

Getting advice from someone who is familiar with the law and courts, its processes, or having someone with you in a court room can make all the difference - or at the least give you some certainty about the outcome.

You also might be entitled to apply for a Special Hardship Order (demerit points or high speed offences) or a Work License (drink or drug driving).

I am available to act on all these kinds of matters and others.

Often, the range of fines you might receive are not so large that the legal fees of other firms can easily exceed them. On top of this, your legal costs are not recoverable. I understand that a proportional response to the problem is needed, and will discuss with you capping your fees to suit the outcome.
